Winter Enrichment Ideas to Keep Your Dog Active All Season Long

Cold weather doesn’t stop dogs from needing exercise, stimulation, and routine. At The Downtown Dog Resort & Hospital, we see many pups struggle with winter boredom, which can lead to chewing, anxiety, and extra energy.

Here are some fun ways to keep your dog active this winter!

1. Indoor Enrichment Games

Golden retriever mix with open mouth, wearing a red collar. The dog looks happy indoors with blurred background and warm lighting.

Even small apartments can become play zones.

Try:

  • Snuffle mats

  • Food puzzles

  • Hide-and-seek with treats

  • Tug-of-war

  • Indoor “find it” scent games

These activities burn mental energy, which is just as important as physical play.

2. DIY Indoor Agility

Dog plays with orange ball inside a red and blue tunnel in a sunlit room. Playful mood with toys in the background.

You don’t need equipment—just household items.

Ideas:

  • Pillows for hurdles

  • Chairs + blankets = tunnels

  • Painter’s tape for “jump lines”

  • Couch cushions for obstacle paths

Just keep everything padded and safe.

3. Outdoor Play (When Weather Allows)

Happy dog with pointy ears, wearing a red collar, sits in a snowy field under clear blue sky. Evergreen trees in the background.

Most dogs still love outdoor time—even in winter.

Be mindful of:

  • Very cold winds

  • Ice

  • Snowballs forming on fur

  • Salt and chemicals

Wipe paws after every walk.

4. Daycare: The Easiest Way to Keep Dogs Active

If your dog struggles with winter boredom, daycare is a game-changer.

Our daycare offers:

  • Three outdoor yards (rare in Baltimore!)

  • Indoor play areas

  • Social groups matched by size & temperament

  • Supervised exercise

  • Mental stimulation

It's the perfect winter outlet.

5. Rotate Toys Weekly

Dogs get bored with the same toys. Create a “toy rotation box” and swap new ones every few days.

Your dog will think they’re new every time!

Keep Your Dog Happy All Winter

With the right enrichment, winter can be just as exciting as summer. If your pup needs exercise, socialization, or a break from winter boredom, our daycare is ready to help.
